AF Multilateral Recognition (MR) is a fundamental component of the Accreditation Federation's mission to create a global trust network. MR agreements enable mutual acceptance of accreditation results among member bodies, streamlining international operations and fostering global cooperation.
Within the AF MR ecosystem, Member Organizations play a key role in promoting mutual understanding, reducing technical barriers, and broadening the acceptance of accredited outcomes. While these organizations may not directly accredit or assess conformity (as do Accreditation Bodies or Conformity Assessment Bodies), their membership fosters a powerful platform for collaboration, policy advocacy, and industry-wide improvements. Recognised Member Organizations gain the authority to participate in AF MR initiatives, amplify best practices, and support the Federation’s overarching mission of quality, trust, and worldwide acceptance of accredited results.
Relevant Scope & Influence
The organization should demonstrate a direct or indirect interest in supporting accreditation, quality assurance, or conformity assessment practices (e.g., an industry trade group promoting safe manufacturing methods).
Must exhibit a clearly defined membership base or network, enabling them to represent a noteworthy portion of a sector or industry.
Commitment to AF MR Principles
Potential member organizations must endorse AF MR’s objectives: facilitating global trade, ensuring acceptance of accredited outcomes, and fostering continuous improvement in quality infrastructure.
Demonstrated readiness to participate in AF MR activities, forums, and knowledge-sharing platforms.
Organizational Governance
Clear leadership and decision-making structures that uphold transparency, ethics, and inclusion.
Mechanisms for enforcing codes of conduct or quality guidelines among the organization’s members (if applicable).
Initial Inquiry
Interested organizations contact the AF MR Secretariat or designated representative to express intent to join as a Recognised Member Organization.
Preliminary screening ensures the organization’s scope and mission align with AF MR priorities.
Formal Submission
The organization provides documentation (e.g., charter, membership guidelines, quality objectives) demonstrating commitment to AF MR standards.
Any existing partnerships, certifications, or contributions to accreditation-related programs should be highlighted.
Review & Decision
A panel or committee evaluates the submission, considering the organization’s influence, governance, and ability to contribute constructively to AF MR objectives.
Upon approval, the organization is formally recognized as a Member Organization, with confirmation of its scope of participation.
Active Participation
Contribute expertise, data, or resources to AF MR working groups, committees, and initiatives aimed at harmonizing accreditation practices.
Attend and engage in relevant meetings, discussions, or policy reviews.
Promotion of AF MR Values
Advocate for global acceptance of accredited results within their sector or industry, encouraging stakeholders to align with international standards.
Share best practices, success stories, and innovative approaches that enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
Ongoing Communication
Maintain open channels with the AF, notifying of major organizational changes, new collaborative projects, or shifts in focus that might impact recognition status.
Provide periodic updates (if requested) to demonstrate consistent alignment with AF MR goals.
Ethical & Transparent Conduct
Uphold high standards of integrity, ensuring any representation of AF MR affiliation is accurate and not misleading.
Establish or enforce codes of conduct within their membership to safeguard impartiality and credibility.
Recognised Member Organizations may receive authorization to use the MR Mark, under specific guidelines:
Defined Scope of Usage
The MR Mark can only appear in materials or contexts that accurately represent the organization’s recognized role in the AF MR framework.
Misuse—implying, for instance, that the organization directly provides accredited certifications—may lead to sanctions.
Brand Consistency
Strictly adhere to AF MR’s rules on size, color, and placement of the Mark, ensuring uniform representation across all recognized members.
Any variations or custom adaptations require prior approval from AF MR authorities.
Monitoring & Corrective Actions
The AF reserves the right to review any public or internal usage of the MR Mark.
If misuse is detected, the Member Organization must implement corrections within a specified timeframe to retain recognition status.
Periodic Assessments
Recognised Member Organizations may undergo scheduled reviews or spot checks to confirm continued alignment with AF MR principles.
These reviews can include examinations of membership conduct, outreach initiatives, or collaborative projects related to accreditation processes.
Adaptation to Evolving Standards
Organizations are expected to stay updated on changing international norms, regulatory shifts, or updated AF MR guidelines.
Continual improvements or adjustments to activities ensure ongoing relevance and compliance.
Expansion of Scope
If a Member Organization wishes to broaden its AF MR involvement—e.g., by introducing new programs or forging new partnerships—it should submit a formal request and relevant documentation for consideration.
The AF will evaluate how the expanded activities align with, or enhance, the MR framework.
Grounds for Suspension
Misrepresentation of affiliation with AF MR or misuse of the MR Mark.
Persistent noncompliance with the Federation’s ethical or operational guidelines.
Evidence of activities that undermine the AF MR’s mission or public trust in accredited results.
Notification & Remediation
The organization is given a clear, written explanation of any compliance issues, along with a timeframe to implement corrective actions.
Suspension or withdrawal only proceeds if these issues remain unresolved or recur repeatedly.
Reinstatement
Following successful remediation, a suspended organization may apply for reinstatement, subject to a new review confirming ongoing compliance.
Global Credibility
Aligning with the AF MR boosts the organization’s standing as a champion of internationally recognized quality and accreditation values.
Members are viewed as thought leaders, facilitating critical dialogue on standardization and mutual recognition.
Networking & Influence
Engage with a wide network of Recognised ABs, CABs, GAGs, and Institutions, unlocking potential collaborations, shared research, and strategic alliances.
Contribute to the development of guidelines or policy recommendations that shape global accreditation practices.
Market Advancement
Organizations that promote the AF MR mission help lower barriers to trade and enhance market acceptance of accredited products, services, and systems.
Their own members or affiliates benefit from more consistent, predictable regulatory pathways.
Knowledge Transfer & Capacity Building
Access to educational forums, training sessions, and best-practice repositories that encourage continual improvement.
Leverage collective expertise to empower members and foster international competitiveness.
